The "Sunshine Vitamin" — Why Indians Are Deficient

The Vitamin D (25-OH) test measures your body's stored form of Vitamin D in blood. Unlike most vitamins, Vitamin D is primarily produced in your skin on exposure to UVB sunlight — which is why it is nicknamed the "sunshine vitamin." It is essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption, bone density, immune regulation, and muscle function.

Paradoxically, despite living in a sun-rich country, over 70% of Indians have insufficient Vitamin D. Key reasons include sunscreen use, clothing coverage, air-conditioned indoor jobs, darker skin requiring more sun exposure to produce D, and very few dietary sources of Vitamin D in a predominantly vegetarian diet.
