A Small Gland with Enormous Influence
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck that produces T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine) — hormones that act like a metabolic thermostat for every cell in the body. The pituitary gland controls thyroid output by releasing TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): high TSH means the pituitary is signalling the thyroid to work harder (hypothyroidism); low TSH means it is telling the thyroid to slow down (hyperthyroidism).
Thyroid disease is the second most common hormonal disorder in India after diabetes, affecting an estimated 42 million people — the majority of them women. Because symptoms can be subtle and mimic other conditions like depression or menopause, many cases go undetected for years without a blood test.

Preparation
No fasting required. However, if you take thyroid medication (e.g., Thyroxine / Eltroxin), collect the blood sample before taking your morning dose, or as directed by your doctor. Biotin supplements can interfere — stop 24–48 hours before the test.
