Lipid Profile

Measures cholesterol and fats in your blood to assess your risk of heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis.

Fasting: 9–12 Hours Required Report: Same Day Sample: Serum

Cholesterol — Not Just One Number

Most people know "cholesterol" as a single number, but a Lipid Profile breaks it into five distinct measurements — and the ratio between them matters far more than any single value. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) deposits cholesterol into artery walls, building plaque. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) does the opposite — scavenging cholesterol and ferrying it back to the liver for disposal. Triglycerides are a separate fat fuelled by refined carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in India, and abnormal lipid levels are present in over 25% of urban Indians — many of whom have no symptoms. The Lipid Profile is the single most important preventive test for cardiovascular health and should be done by every adult above age 30 at least once every 3–5 years.

Parameters Tested

ParameterDesirable LevelSignificance
Total Cholesterol< 200 mg/dLOverall cholesterol level
HDL Cholesterol> 40 mg/dL (M) > 50 mg/dL (F)"Good" cholesterol — higher is better
LDL Cholesterol< 100 mg/dL (optimal)"Bad" cholesterol — lower is better
VLDL Cholesterol2–30 mg/dLVery low-density lipoprotein (calculated)
Triglycerides< 150 mg/dLBlood fats — elevated by sugar, alcohol
TC/HDL Ratio< 5Cardiac risk ratio
