The liver is the body's largest internal organ and performs over 500 distinct biochemical functions — from converting food into energy and neutralising alcohol and drugs, to producing bile for fat digestion and synthesising vital proteins like albumin and clotting factors. An LFT (Liver Function Test) measures key enzymes, proteins, and pigments that reflect how well the liver is carrying out these functions.
What makes LFT so clinically useful is that liver disease is often silent in its early stages. Conditions like fatty liver (NAFLD), chronic hepatitis B or C, and early cirrhosis can cause significant damage before any symptoms appear — making routine LFT checks essential for anyone at risk.

Who Should Get Tested?
Preparation
Fasting for 8–10 hours is preferred for best accuracy. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. Inform the doctor of all medications being taken, as some drugs can affect liver enzyme levels.
