KFT / RFT – Kidney Function Test

Evaluates how well your kidneys are filtering waste from the blood. Essential for detecting CKD, acute kidney injury, and monitoring dialysis patients.

Fasting: Not Required Report: Same Day Sample: Serum

How Well Are Your Kidneys Filtering?

Your kidneys are remarkable organs — each containing about one million tiny filters called nephrons that collectively process approximately 200 litres of blood every single day. The KFT (Kidney Function Test), also called RFT (Renal Function Test), checks how efficiently this filtration is happening by measuring waste products, electrolytes, and filtration rate in your blood.

The challenge with kidney disease is that symptoms only appear once over 60–70% of kidney function is already lost. This makes KFT especially important as a preventive screening test — particularly for India's 77 million diabetics and the large hypertensive population, both of whom are at disproportionately high risk of developing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Parameters Tested

ParameterNormal RangeSignificance
Serum CreatinineM: 0.7–1.3 mg/dL  ·  F: 0.5–1.1 mg/dLBest single kidney function marker
Blood Urea / BUNUrea: 15–45 mg/dLNitrogen waste from protein metabolism
eGFR> 90 mL/min/1.73m²Estimated filtration rate — CKD staging
Sodium (Na+)136–145 mEq/LFluid balance regulation
Potassium (K+)3.5–5.0 mEq/LCardiac rhythm — dangerous if elevated
Uric AcidM: 3.5–7.2 mg/dL  ·  F: 2.6–6.0 mg/dLGout risk, renal stone formation
Calcium (Ca++)8.5–10.5 mg/dLBone and kidney stone correlation
Phosphorus2.5–4.5 mg/dLElevated in CKD; parathyroid link

Who Should Get Tested?

Patients with Diabetes or Hypertension
Swelling in feet, ankles or puffy eyes
Reduced or foamy urine output
Family history of kidney disease
Monitoring patients on dialysis
Pre-operative kidney assessment

Preparation

No fasting required for KFT in isolation. Stay well-hydrated. Avoid heavy protein meals the night before (can temporarily raise creatinine). Inform your doctor of any medications such as NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics.
