The HIV I & II test detects antibodies or antigens produced in response to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. 4th-generation combination assays — the current standard — detect both the p24 antigen (appears within days of infection) and HIV antibodies (appear within weeks), significantly shortening the diagnostic window period compared to older tests.
With modern antiretroviral therapy (ART), a person diagnosed early with HIV can live a near-normal life span with an undetectable viral load — meaning they also cannot transmit the virus to partners (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).
