HBsAg – Hepatitis B Test

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen test — the primary screening test for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Detects active or chronic HBV.

Fasting: Not Required Report: Same Day Sample: Serum

Silent, Serious — and Detectable

HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen) is the earliest marker of Hepatitis B infection to appear in blood — detectable 1–10 weeks after exposure, often well before any symptoms develop. A positive result means the Hepatitis B virus is actively present in the body. If it persists beyond 6 months, the infection is classified as chronic Hepatitis B.

India carries one of the world's largest Hepatitis B burdens — with over 40 million chronic carriers, many completely unaware. Untreated chronic HBV silently inflames and scars the liver over 10–30 years, progressing to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Early detection through HBsAg screening is literally life-saving — effective antiviral therapy can suppress viral replication and prevent disease progression.

Result Interpretation

HBsAg Negative

No Hepatitis B surface antigen detected. You are either not infected or have cleared the infection. If unvaccinated, consider Hepatitis B vaccination.

HBsAg Positive

Hepatitis B infection detected. Confirm with HBV DNA PCR and LFT. Consult a gastroenterologist or hepatologist urgently for management.
