Dengue Test – NS1 & Antibodies

Dengue NS1 Antigen + IgM/IgG antibody panel — for rapid, accurate diagnosis of dengue fever at any stage of illness.

Fasting: Not Required Report: Same Day Sample: Serum + EDTA

Catching Dengue at Every Stage of Illness

Dengue is caused by any of four serotypes of the Dengue virus (DENV 1–4), transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito — a daytime biter that breeds in stagnant water around homes. Because the virus behaves differently at different stages of infection, no single test catches dengue at every point. That's why the dengue panel combines NS1 Antigen + IgM/IgG antibodies to maximise detection regardless of when testing occurs.

The NS1 glycoprotein is shed by the virus into the bloodstream in large amounts during the first 1–5 days of fever, making it the earliest detectable marker. Antibodies (IgM then IgG) rise from day 4–5 onwards. Alongside dengue serology, a CBC with platelet count is essential — a falling platelet count is the hallmark warning of dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Dengue Panel – What Each Test Means

TestBest Time to TestWhat It Detects
NS1 AntigenDay 1–5 of feverDengue viral protein — earliest marker
Dengue IgMDay 4–5 onwardsAcute / recent infection antibody
Dengue IgGDay 7+ or past infectionPast immunity or secondary infection
CBC + Platelet CountAt presentation & dailyMonitors severity — thrombocytopaenia

Warning Signs Requiring Urgent Care

Seek emergency care immediately if you have dengue and experience:

Severe abdominal pain
Persistent vomiting
Bleeding gums or nose
Blood in urine or stool
Platelet count below 20,000
Sudden improvement then rapid deterioration

Preparation

No fasting required. Bring records of when fever started — this determines which test is most appropriate. If you are on Day 1–5 of fever, NS1 is tested; if fever is Day 5 or later, antibody tests are more relevant.
