CBC – Complete Blood Count

The most common blood test — evaluates overall health and detects a wide range of disorders including anaemia, infection, and blood diseases.

Fasting: Not Required Report: Same Day Sample: Blood (EDTA)

The Most Ordered Blood Test in the World

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) — also called a Full Blood Count (FBC) — is the single most commonly ordered blood test globally. It provides a snapshot of all three major blood cell types: Red Blood Cells (RBC) that carry oxygen, White Blood Cells (WBC) that fight infection, and Platelets that control bleeding — along with haemoglobin, haematocrit, and cell size indices.

A CBC gives your doctor more diagnostic information per millilitre of blood than almost any other single test. It can simultaneously suggest anaemia, infection, allergy, leukaemia, dengue, and nutritional deficiencies — making it the natural first step in almost any clinical workup.

Parameters Tested

ParameterNormal Range (Adult)What It Measures
Haemoglobin (Hb)M: 13–17 g/dL  ·  F: 12–15 g/dLOxygen-carrying protein in RBCs
RBC Count4.5–5.9 million/µLNumber of red blood cells
WBC Count4,000–11,000/µLImmune system cells — infection indicator
Platelet Count1.5–4.0 lakh/µLBlood clotting cells
PCV / HaematocritM: 40–50%  ·  F: 36–46%Percentage of blood volume that is RBCs
MCV80–100 fLAverage size of red blood cells
MCH27–33 pgAverage Hb per red blood cell
Differential WBCNeutrophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, Monocytes, BasophilsType breakdown of white cells

Why Is This Test Done?

Diagnose Anaemia (low Hb / RBC)
Detect infections (elevated WBC)
Identify blood disorders like leukaemia
Assess bleeding disorders (low platelets)
Monitor Dengue (platelet drop)
Routine health check-up screening

Preparation

No fasting required for a standalone CBC. However, if it is part of a broader panel (e.g., with blood sugar or lipid profile), your doctor may advise 8–12 hours of fasting. Drink plenty of water. Avoid strenuous exercise the night before.
