Blood group typing is one of the most fundamental tests in medicine. The ABO system classifies red blood cells by surface antigens — A, B, both (AB), or neither (O) — and the corresponding antibodies naturally present in plasma. The Rh (Rhesus) system adds a second dimension: the presence or absence of the D antigen, giving us Rh+ or Rh–. Together, these two systems produce 8 distinct blood types.
Transfusing incompatible blood triggers a catastrophic acute haemolytic transfusion reaction — the immune system attacks and destroys the foreign red cells, which can be rapidly fatal. This is why blood group typing is non-negotiable before any surgery, transfusion, or organ transplant. For pregnant women, knowing Rh status is equally critical: an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby requires anti-D injection to protect future pregnancies.
